Just when America thought people could not get any crazier, they go out and surprise us again. In the past couple of months, the news has been filled with stories about the Westboro Baptists protestors, who go to military funeral services and shout a slew of indecencies. Just as we were all getting used to this horrible annoyance, as of yesterday, there is now a new component to these protests. Yesterday at Arlington Cemetery a group of 70 counter-protesters showed up to in hopes to silence the Baptists and block them from the view of the ceremony. The interesting twist is, 10 of those members claim to be apart of a branch of the KKK, the Knights of the Southern Cross. Yeah, you heard that right - the Klu Klux Klan. So while it's great that a group decided to tell the Baptists they are clearly in the wrong, this counter group also has some wrong beliefs of their own. One of the members of the KKK group commented saying he is not a racist but simply thinks that the white race is "slowly and most assuredly being denigrated." When a member of the Westboro Baptist group was asked to commented they said that they believe the counter-protestors were all about white power and white supremacy. Hold up. It's Memorial Day at Arlington Cemetery and these two groups are discussing racism?! Today is the day America is supposed to be honoring our troops and those who lost lives fighting for our country. But of course, in typical American fashion, the true purpose must be forgotten and every situation is therefore turned into a daytime soap opera.

It is so sad that these protests are diminishing the value of these military funerals. First, the Westboro Baptists showed up and upset people by yelling profanities, even at grieving families. Now, other groups show up to counter-protests, including members of the KKK, only to make the scene more chaotic. While I believe everyone has the right to their opinion and the right to freely voice it, this has truly gotten out of hand. Tolerance would be the solution in solving this problem, and would finally give peace the families and friends of the dead soldiers. All they long for is a peaceful ceremony, with NO protesters at all.

He'll be back! ... or not
The following is a response based upon this article by Michael Martinez, CNN
Everyone knows who Arnold Schwarzenegger is, popular movie star, the Austrian body builder, former governor of California - but now, father of an illegitimate child? According to recent news reports and this article, Arnold finally admitted to having an affair 10 years and fathering a child from that affair. This news came after he and his wife announced they were getting a divorce. They seemed to be a happy couple with a great family, but of course now that these reports have come to light it all makes sense. This article specifically pinpoints how this scandal is going to effect the future of this former Governator. I would have to agree with everything the author says in this article because I believe it will be difficult for him to bounce back politically after this because it is such a horrible scandal. Plus, he's already done enough damage to California's budget and debt, so not many people trust him already. Also, this scandal will definitely put a dent not only on Arnold's personal life, but his Hollywood career. Unfortunately due to his mishaps and mistakes, Arnold's latest ambitions will have to be put on the back burner.

Clearly, this CBT relates very well to this article and the situation at hand with Arnold. Unfortunately, not even leaders or people or high positions in the government are exempt from bad behavior. All of mankind is totally depraved and that is why there are laws and more importantly, God's law. If only Arnold had paid attention to what God's word says, then he might not be in the predicament he is in now.

In the past couple of weeks there have been several monumental events: Obama released his birth certificate, a Royal wedding, and the death of Osama Bin Laden. While the Royal wedding is basically insignificant the other two events have caused much stir and speculation in the American people. This article explains how recently, due to the death of Bin Laden, that the former "birthers" are now becoming the "deathers". First people didn’t believe that Obama was really born in the U.S. and now there are some who are not willing to accept Osama Bin Laden’s death, either. It seems that people are creating elaborate theories and conspiracies that simply don’t add up. Also, the author made sure to add while that rumors spread in the Middle East would be normal, the fact that there is such talk here in America is really surprising and almost disappointing.

And the next president is... Donald Trump??
The following response is based upon this article by Edward Morrissey, CNN.
As Obama's time in the White House is coming to end in the upcoming year, in the news lately there has been much buzz about who will run against him. The media is grabbing a hold of any information they can get and throwing random names out there that are supposedly going to be on the ballot in 2012. One of those very random names would be Donald Trump. Sound familiar? Well of course, he is the multi-billionaire who fires people every week on his famous reality TV show The Apprentice. Not someone you'd peg to be the next president, but we didn't think Arnold would ever be governor either. Unfortunately for the Donald there are many are worried that he is serious about running in the next presidential election. As the author stated in the article, it would not only seem ridiculous for him to be our next president but he could also harm the Republican party. Trump apparently is hoping to get the GOP nomination, but if not, will run as an independent. He is white, rich, and conservative, which will cause many right-wingers to vote for him and this will without a doubt split the Republican vote. Meaning that the Democrat nominee (most likely Obama) will win and were back where we were 4 years ago. This really could be a problem and throw off the next election, all because some millionaire thinks he can be president too. And as the author points out, the scary thing is, because of his fortune Trump might actually have the money to fund a full on campaign.

After reading this article and careful consideration I came to the conclusion that it is journalism. Some may argue that the author was to bias in his presentation of ideas, but this specific article was meant to be an editorial. It was found in the editorial section, therefore allowing the author to freely state their opinion and how he truly felt. Even though it was his opinion the author managed to still include outside sources and facts to back the things he was saying. So, it wasn't just a blatant rant, but a well though out article, making this piece journalism.

Growth is an important CBT that relates to our country and how we can become better and grow as citizens. Who is our president is a big factor to how fast our countries grows in economic, social, and foreign areas. Was Libya a good idea?
The following response is based upon this article by Alan Silverleib, CNN.
Lately Obama's approval ratings have been increasing as well as speculations as to whether his policies are actually working. And with the recent military intervention in Libya, this speculation is only growing. Unfortunately much of the U.S. and even Congress are having a hard time accepting Obama's new plans for Libya and believe it to be quite foolish. Even though a no fly zone area over Libya was approved by the UN last week, many critics still remain. The Speaker of the House, Jon Boehner, is even questioning Obama's strategy for the Libya. In a letter to President Barack Obama, Boehner, R-Ohio, said that he and other House members were troubled that the president committed U.S. military resources to war "without clearly defining for the American people, the Congress and our troops what the mission in Libya is and what America's role is in achieving that mission." The main concerns for getting involved is if the mission they have planned for the North African country will solve anything and if the mission will put our own country into a bigger deficit. Many members of Congress are also upset because they feel as if Obama made a hasty decision without properly consulting both Houses first.

Moammar Gadhafi, the leader of Libya, had threatened to unleash his military "without mercy" on the rebel stronghold of Benghazi. So it seems reasonable that the U.S., along with other countries, would feel compelled to get involved and try to help. Of course, this leads to a messy situation, because it can be considered unconstitutional to attack Gadhafi since it's technically our problem.

Ditch the tight outfits!!
The following response is based upon this article by Howard Breuer and Sara Hammel, People.com
As if Lindsay Lohan didn't already have enough problems, she has found herself back in court... again! But this time she's making it interesting, because shop-lifting isn't already interesting enough, and she's choosing to purposely wear skin tight, revealing outfits to her court hearings. Many fans and interested citizens have been following all her recent courtroom appearances, just to see what inappropriate outfit she wears next. You would assume that an individual who is in trouble with the law as much as she is would eventually learn her lesson; yet Lohan still cannot seem to grasp the implications of her actions. Her choice in clothing speak volumes for her attitude and her attitude is exactly this, she does not care at all. Clearly, she shows no regret in her past decisions. Instead of having a remorseful disposition Lohan chooses to dressing in extremely tight clothing to her court hearings, which is highly disrespectful. This starlet who was once popular for her acting ability is now seen as a lost cause.

While I did learn that if I'm ever convicted of a crime I should dress in conservative clothing to impress the judge, I did not become more self-governing. Not only am I tired of hearing about Lindsay Lohan's daily escapades but it is beyond me how some people still look up to her. Also, many let her get away with her in court fashion faux pas', just because she is a celebrity.

Gadhafi: the "King of Kings"
The following response is based upon this article by Mike Pearson, CNN.
In the past month, especially these past few weeks, much newsworthy events have been taking place in the Middle East. Protesters are emerging from many countries, like in Egypt and now in Libya, fighting for their natural human rights and trying to stop the oppression from their leaders. Libya, which is a country in Africa, has been ruled by Moammar Gadhafi for 42 years and the people have finally had enough. Unfortunately he is a corrupt leader, who has had a past of terrorism and violence towards many other countries, especially the United States. Despite his lack of popularity among most people, the article reports that he shows up in public dressed up in ridiculous attire that is flamboyant and obnoxious. Another sad factor mentioned is that while Gadhafi has many enemies within Libya, there are still many who can't deny his supposed economic achievements. Apparently he stood up to the West who nationalized oil companies and a good number of people still respect him for that.
Who: Gadhafi (the ruler of Libya) and all the Libyan people, including the protesters
What: Gadhafi, despite the recent protests, refuses to show any weakness or signs of cooperation with his people.

I believe I was better informed about the ruler of Libya, and I'm sure other readers were as well. It is extremely important for people to be aware of the situation going on in that country and they need to do so by having all the facts and background about Gadhafi, who is the center of the issue. This article succeeds in better informing the nation about this topic, so that we may decide how feel about it and make our own opinions. Also, the information is reliable and backed up with sources and a numerous amount of quotations.

Mars luckily dodges prosecution charges
The following response is based upon this article by Alan Duke, CNN.
He'd catch a grenade for you, put his hand on a blade for you, and jump in front of a train for you... Yes, Bruno Mars claims he'd do any of those things for the girl of his dreams. But those are just lyrics and he is just an ordinary man. Unfortunately due to his sudden fame, he is in the spotlight more than any other ordinary citizen would be. This is why his offense of being found possessing cocaine in last September in a Las Vegas casino, is such a huge ordeal. Celebrities are looked upon as role models and are worshiped as idols in this country, which can be a double-edged sword for those in the entertainment industry. Bruno Mars found this out the hard way when he was arrested for illegal drug possession and then later charged. The media can either be on your side by puffing up your image, but as soon as you take a wrong step, they are there to record your downfall. Luckily, the judge on Mars' case let him off the hook with "deferred adjunction", another plus to be famous. His charges will now be dropped if he stays out of trouble for a year, pays a fine, completes community service, and gets counseling.

What: Judge offered a deal to Mars, so that charges in his case could be dropped.

Obama pushes broadband expansion proposal
The following response is based upon this article by the CNN Wire Staff.
This article discusses President Obama's plan to extend wireless coverage to more than 98% of Americans, which is one of his main goals for our country right now. He has had this idea for quite some time and highlight it specifically in his State of the Union speech a few weeks ago. Obama believes that this plan is necessary for the new and developing global marketplace. In order for our economy to thrive he believes our telecommunications need to be improved greatly, yet he has many opponents in this idea. Even the GOP disagrees with this potential proposal, for they say it won't create more jobs and it is unnecessary spending. Yet, Obama believes that increasing wireless connection is the key to creating new innovations, new investments, and more jobs for the people. And according to the White House, the 2009 stimulus package included $7 billion for the adoption of greater broadband access for America.

He works through others in order to bring about salvation and redemption, which can only be found through our Lord, Jesus Christ. This article displays Obama's need to expand broadband in order to get all Americans connected and make our economy stronger. While, he may want this proposal to be passed so we become a more up-to-date nation, God can use to bring together His people closer and bring more to salvation.
This article discusses President Obama's plan to extend wireless coverage to more than 98% of Americans, which is one of his main goals for our country right now. He has had this idea for quite some time and highlight it specifically in his State of the Union speech a few weeks ago. Obama believes that this plan is necessary for the new and developing global marketplace. In order for our economy to thrive he believes our telecommunications need to be improved greatly, yet he has many opponents in this idea. Even the GOP disagrees with this potential proposal, for they say it won't create more jobs and it is unnecessary spending. Yet, Obama believes that increasing wireless connection is the key to creating new innovations, new investments, and more jobs for the people. And according to the White House, the 2009 stimulus package included $7 billion for the adoption of greater broadband access for America.

Advice for Palin & Gingrich
The following response is based upon this article by Ed Rollins, CNN.
The main point of this article was for the author to express his opinions on what he feels Sarah Palin, and Newt Gingrich should do to better their public appearance. So, the who of this article would be exactly those two Republican politicians, Palin and Gingrich. The what of this article is the author's opinion or view on how these two politicians act in public speaking situations and what they could do to improve their images. This subject doesn't necessarily have a specific location, so the where cannot be defined or found. Since this was written on January 19, 2011, that date would be the when of this article. The 'why' of this article can be explained as a response to a recent interview that Palin appeared in on Fox's Sean Hannity show, where she claimed she was not going to "shut up" anytime soon. In the beginning of this article the author begins by bashing on Palin and her inability speak intelligently, or represent Republicans in a positive light. Then towards the end of the article, the author brings up Newt Gingrich, a fellow Republican, who seems to be in the same position as Palin and therefore offered some advice for her. They both could be potential presidential nominees, although unlikely, it is a possibility, and the author acknowledges that they both need to do a better job at represented themselves. The piece of advice that Gingrich offers Palin is that she needs to, "be more careful and think through what she's saying and how she's saying it".

This CBT relates best to this article, because as it states, "courage is fallen man's response God's imprinted truth", aligns with the issue the author wrote about. Earlier in the article he writes how Palin boldly proclaimed she would not "sit down or shut up", which is bold courage, but could be considered a false sense of courage.

To repeal or not to repeal?
The following response is based upon this article by Ed Hornick, CNN.
Recently, Republicans in the House of Representatives have begun the process to try and repeal President Obama's health care reform law. This article successfully breaks down the issue by presenting the opposing views of both political parties. The author goes on to write about how Republicans, who have the majority in the House and a good number of seats in the Senate, are living up to their campaign promises to repeal Obama's health care plan. But, the chances of repeal are actually slim to none, for it may get passed in the House, but the Senate is mainly controlled by the Democrats. Most Republicans have even conceded the fact that a full, outright appeal of the law is seemingly impossible. Yet, they are hoping to eliminate specific parts of the law, and de-fund portions of it. Polls have shown that American's might be unhappy with the law, which is only fueling the fire for Republicans. All the while, Democrats are arguing that the public is behind the law, which supposedly has helped many people already, and are very angry at the GOP's efforts to repeal it.
This leaves us all wondering... what in the world will happen with heath care? And will the Democrats and Republicans ever be able to find a happy medium?
After reading and examining this article I concluded that it is journalism. The article is not bias, and actually presents how both opposing sides feel about the issue of health care reform. The information in the article was supported correctly by statistics, outside sources, and quotes, all helping to prove its credibility and ability to inform the people about themselves. From this article people should be able to process and dissect the information available (along with watching the videos) and form their own opinion on the health care reform law.
This CBT relates to the article above, because God is the one in control of all things. He was in control in the recent mid-term elections in which Republicans gained control of the House. Therefore, He has a plan for America, our country, and even for health care reform. Maybe God put Republicans in charge so that they may repeal the law, or at least make changes to make people more happy with its provisions. No matter it is important to remember His sovereignty in all situations.
